Trigano Silver 420 goes home ...

We've just taken our pop-top caravan back to its homeland of France, travelling to the south it was over 2,000 km as a round trip from Calais.

French Telepass was great, as we were able to drive straight through the Peage, while full size caravans cannot, and others have to queue, but that is old news for those with trailer tents I guess.

Just before leaving I discovered that the Dometic fridge was not working on either 240v or 12v.
Or so I thought.
It turned out that the fridge worked silently on 240v, and took a couple of hours to get cool - I obviously didn't wait long enough.

[ I didn't realise that at the time so removed it and bought an Argos value tabletop fridge on the way to Dover, which served us well for the trip. ]

I subsequently tried running the original fridge from our 110Ah leisure battery, but the fridge flattened the battery very quickly. I subsequently read that absorbtion fridges, whilst silent, use a lot more power.
So it would have been OK if I had dual electrics and wanted to burn more diesel ... but we decided just to use a coolbag with ice for the trip and then connect to mains hookup at the site.

This was our first use of our Outdoor Revolution Movelite Square awning, a motorhome awning which will fit the Trigano:

It worked well. At 2.4m x 2.4m square base its not large, but we did not want a large awning.
It either fixes directly to the Trigano Silver rail, or you can attach straps over the top and peg down the other side. Our two children don't want to share, hence the two one person tents from Decathlon.

On our return we suffered a rapid tyre deflation, probably due to terrible potholes in a certain French city.
Fortunately my tyre pressure sensors detected this immediately and I was able to head quickly to a side road and jack up the caravan before the tyre had fully deflated - it only took two minutes to go flat.
I was just using the basic TyrePal TD1000 which I bought for £99, but it did an excellent job informing me as soon as the tyre started to deflate.
I had previously set the tyre pressures using Adrian's guide here

Net result of two weeks in France with the 420CP?

The Trigano performed very well, though with four of us sleeping in it on the long journeys to and from the south of France it was a little cramped. We found two excellent Aires en route for sleeping. Since arriving home I've removed the wardrobe and cupboard opposite the dinette and will be replacing them with a slimline cupboard to create more space, plus making a simple removable bed extension for the second double bed, which is not really full size.

I also discovered a leak in the corner of the pop-up section, due to a failure of the silicone seal above the hinge, but that should be easy to correct.
Hob ignition is still erratic, working sometimes and not others, for no apparent reason. So matches are the solution for now, when needed.

A couple of problems with sticking door latches on the bathroom door and an overhead cupboard, but nothing major.

Saturday driving on the Autoroute was fabulous ... I realised that I had driven for most of the day without needing to overtake anything ... the reason was that HGVs are banned between 7.30am and 7.30pm at weekends. Overall it was much easier driving on the Autoroutes than driving on UK motorways...

We travelled with DFDS ferries, Dover-Calais, £120 return for car+caravan+4.

Paid work since bought in 2012

This is the work that I have paid for, since buying my 420CP in 2012:

  1. re-rubbering of AL-KO axle suspension (sent to AL-KO UK HQ service centre) ~£500
(suspension was very low when purchased)
  2. three new tyres at £59 each (replacing originals which were 6 years old)
  3. fitting of AL-KO AKS3004 hitch stabiliser and lock to replace original hitch
    (greatly improved tow stability)
  4. replacement of internal door lock handle (which was not latching correctly)
  5. replacement gas hose and adapter for BP Gaslite cylinder
  6. new Leisure battery (not present when bought) and replacement terminal
  7. fourth new tyre to replace damaged tyre (2013)

Trigano Silver 420 - first outing ...

Finally took our Trigano Silver for its first outing last weekend.

Since last year I've added a new 110Ah leisure battery, three new tyres, and am using a TyrePal pressure monitor to monitor them when travelling. Connected a new gas cylinder and went away for the weekend. Was advised to go for 110Ah battery if I want to fit a caravan mover in future.
We also replaced the hitch with an AKS3004 kit for improved security and stability.

The hob ignition seemed temperamental, only working sometimes, but that maybe due to running it from the new battery (no mains hookup at the site). Will check.
Tried to get the fridge to run on gas without success - will try again at home. It has a manual pilot ignition button.

I have also bought an awning in January - a Movelite square campervan awning, which I bought for £150. It does fit reasonably well, fastened either via the awning rail or over-the-roof straps.

My Trigano Silver 420 CP

I have the 420CP with a fixed double bed at the front.
This page from a Dutch site, shows the models as they were in 2007.

This page shows the 2011 configurations.

They all

  • fit through most standard garage doors (so can be stored in garage if sufficient length available)
  • have solid sides
  • have good storage
  • are lighter to pull than similar fullsize caravans
  • are said to be more stable for towing (apparently 1/3 less wind resistance)
  • don't necessarily require you to buy a more powerful car in order to tow them
(ie. they are lightweight caravans). I tow with a 1.6 eHDi Citroen C4 Grand Picasso.
... but I'm yet to discover good cheap options for awnings, as they have two rails. Need to research further.

Any Trigano Silver forums? ... or documents online?

I've just become the new owner of a Trigano Silver 420 (2007) - a four berth pop-up caravan, made by Trigano of France.

One thing that has really surprised me is the fact that there is so little info on the internet about these pop-up caravans. Does anyone know of a Trigano Silver forum?
There is a group for Trigano trailer tents on Yahoo groups, and they are now allowing Trigano Silver owners to join.

I've found some details of  UK dealers but there do not seem to be many, and none very near to me in Somerset.

My Trigano Silver has now had its axle re-rubbered by AL-KO as the suspension was very low when I bought it. Guess the previous owners overloaded it. From what I can see this can happen to any caravans using the AL-KO chassis and axle.

My Trigano Silver 420 has a full set of manuals except an overall user manual ... though I have the service guide.
I contacted trigano.fr (Silver section) and they sent me a PDF copy. Thanks Trigano.
